S.ilverstone - He always said it: “Racing in MotoGP only makes sense if you get results”. Andrea Dovizioso is not one of those who competes just to do it, he doesn't think about money, he just wants to win. He was convinced he could do it with Yamaha, but the results were bad, disastrous. And so, Andrea decided that it made no sense to continue, better to stop earlier, while the championship is in progress. He will race at Silverstone, at Zeltweg, finally at Misano, then he will return to having fun with motocross, thus skipping the last six races. It is not an inference, says an official Yamaha statement, with which Andrea had directly signed the contract. Here it is integral.

Andrea Dovizioso retires after the San Marino GP

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. announces that MotoGP champion Andrea Dovizioso has decided to retire from MotoGP after the next Grand Prix of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera.

Dovizioso and Yamaha have maintained an excellent relationship after the more than positive season held with the Tech3 Yamaha satellite team in 2012, with six third places and a fourth place in the final standings. TOndrea rejoined the Yamaha satellite riders at the San Marino GP in 2021, when Franco Morbidelli joined the Factory Team. Dovizioso originally planned to stay with the WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Racing Team for the entire 2022 MotoGP season, riding an official YZR-M1 and receiving the full support of Yamaha Motor Co.

Cal Crutchlow, official Yamaha test rider, will be the replacement rider of the WithU Yamaha RNF MotoGP Team for the remaining six races of the 2022 season.

Lin Jarvis, Managing Director Yamaha Motor Racing

“I would like to start by saying that, of course, we are all sorry that Andrea is leaving this sport earlier than expected. He is a big name in MotoGP and we will miss him in the paddock. "

"Last year we felt very lucky that he was available and wanted to join our MotoGP program when Franky joined the Yamaha Factory team, thus creating the need for a replacement rider for the rest of the 2021 season. Andrea's experience and methodical nature were of great interest to Yamaha and the RNF team and the project was set with the intention of continuing for the entire 2022 season. "

"Unfortunately, Andrea struggled to get the maximum potential out of the M1 and therefore the results did not come, creating understandable frustration for Andrea. Finally, during the summer break, he confirmed his desire to retire before the end of the season." .

"After mutual comparisons, it was deemed appropriate for Andrea to race his last race in Misano, in his home GP. Of course, Yamaha will continue to give 'Dovi' its full support in the next three races. In the meantime, let's enjoy the races. his last three GPs and we celebrate the end of a spectacular career at Misano ”.

    Andrea Dovizioso

“I thank Lin for his words, which I fully agree with. In 2012, the experience with the Iwata manufacturer in MotoGP had been very positive for me and since then I have always thought that, sooner or later, I would like to have an official contract with Yamaha. This possibility presented itself, actually in a somewhat casual way, in the course of 2021. I decided to give it a try because I strongly believed in this project and in the possibility of doing well ".

"Unfortunately, MotoGP has changed profoundly in recent years. The situation is very different since then: I have never felt comfortable with the bike, and I have not been able to make the most of its potential despite the invaluable and continuous help of the bike. team and all of Yamaha ".

"The results have been negative, but beyond that, I still consider it a very important life experience. When there are so many difficulties, you need to have the ability to manage the situation and your emotions well. We have not reached the goals. desired, but the consultations with the Yamaha technicians and with those of my team have always been positive and constructive, both for them and for me. The relationship remained fair and professionally interesting even in the most critical moments: it was not so obvious that this would happen " .

"For all this and for their support, I thank Yamaha, the RNF Racing Team, WithU and the other sponsors involved in the project. It didn't go as we hoped, but it was right to try. My adventure will end in Misano, but the relationship with all the people involved in this challenge will remain intact forever. Thank you all ".

Later, there will be a press conference by Andrea Dovizioso, who will explain his motivations in this way.
