MotoGP 2022. UK GP at Silverstone, Andrea Dovizioso: "Right to stop if you don't get certain results"

Andrea explained the reasons for his early retirement: why not finish the season? “I wasn't able to adapt to the M1, I couldn't make the changes I wanted, I couldn't take advantage of my experience: having a good relationship with Yamaha, I decided to stop. In Misano we will have a great party ”. On the future: "I'm working on a project, I think it's interesting"

S.ilverstone - He is certainly not one who lets himself be taken by emotion. He doesn't even do it this time, in the press conference that formalizes his retirement after the Misano GP.

Also because, as he explains Andrea Dovizioso: “The decision is now metabolized, I was already ready for this. It is not an aggressive withdrawal, but a gradual one. Almost painless, even if after more than 20 years always in the same environment it is never easy to get to this point. But it was the right moment to do it: if you can't be where you want to be, you realize it's time to stop ”.

Andrea smiles a little, even if, in reality, he is calm: for him it is the best decision, just to stop early. I think differently, as I explained in the video comment #lanotiziainprimafila: I tell Dovi, I express my concerns: in my opinion it was more right to finish the season. Andrea, as always, accepts the criticism, does not get upset, but calmly explains his reasons.

“Being a rational and critical person I must have one important motivation to do something. Not being able to adapt to the bike to get certain results, not being able to improve this aspect, it no longer made sense to move on. Another thing would have been to be able to work on certain structural aspects of the M1, to be able to use my experience to arrive at certain results, but it is not possible to do this during the season. Having a good relationship with Yamaha I decided to talk to them over the summer and we came to this conclusion. The pilot has to focus on what he does, you can't have other thoughts in mind "

P.why end up in Misano?

"I think it's the right place to do it, with a party with my friends and the people of the paddock"

Did you understand from the first moment that you got on the M1 that you would have difficulties?

“At the beginning, the problem was the ergonomics of the bike: having short“ levers ”, I didn't reach the controls well, I struggled to move on the M1 for the width of the frame. Then, when I took part in the first race (Misano 2021, NDA), I realized that there was something anomalous in the grip, but being, precisely, only the first GP, you cannot have the situation under control, you cannot you give that much importance. Instead, grip was the biggest problem for me and I talked a lot about it with the Yamaha engineers. I was genuinely surprised, I realized that my way of riding was not the best to exploit the potential that the bike shows to have with Fabio (Quartararo, NDA). I worked a lot with Forcada and with Yamaha, but we couldn't find a solution: my riding style doesn't go well with this bike "

When you joined Ducati, only one rider was riding that bike: can you compare the situation of Yamaha today with what you found then?

"No. Apart from the fact that it is a very different MotoGP, we are almost talking about another era. In 2013, Ducati did not have a good base and the limits were many, while today Yamaha is world champion. Surely, compared to the past, it is a more particular bike: it remains well balanced, but to get certain performances you have to ride in an extreme way, as only Fabio can do. But the situation is very different from that of Ducati at the time "

In some way, does the rear tire introduced by Michelin in 2020 have to do with it?

“It was certainly an important change for me, even with the Ducati I struggled to send, but then I still got acceptable results. It can hit the mark, but, as always, many factors have an impact: this is the most exasperated class of motorcycling, development and changes are very fast, you race in a very different way than a few years ago. If you are fast in practice, you can keep that pace more or less throughout the race, overtaking has decreased, it's very different "

T.all your colleagues have had words of great esteem towards you.

“If that's what they think, it's really nice to be considered a good driver by your rival”.

And now?

“For some time I have been thinking about creating something important (related to motocross, NDA), I am focused on a project that I think is beautiful, but has not yet materialized. We will talk about it later ”.

I say clearly: I will miss Dovi very much, on and off the track. Thanks for everything, champion.
